There are two main advantages if you rent a private house vs. an all-inclusive hotel for your vacations.
The first one is the price. If you eat healthy and prefer to cook your own food or go to a different restaurant each time, you can save up to 50% on your vacations. More so if you can pull together with few friends and rent a nicer house. For example: you can find a beautiful ocean view vacation rental in Costa Rica with four bedrooms and an infinity pool for under $2,000 per week. If it is four couples, eight of you, then it comes down to $250 per person per week vs. $600-$900 per person per week in a decent all-inclusive hotel. You can spend that money on other activities or save it. Take an expensive open water fishing trip, take a dive course, buy nice souvenir - whatever rocks your boat!
Second advantage is privacy. If you are like me, you might prefer to lie in shade by the pool with no kids running around and screaming and read in piece that book you meant to read on your vacation, or swim in the clean pool where there is are no guys who have been sitting in wet bar drinking beer for three hours without standing up! Or maybe your girlfriend or wife likes to sunbathe topless! You also spend more quality time with your friends.
You have to do the due diligence when renting from private parties as this is less secure than hotels. I would advise not to prepay up front if you can and inspect the house upon arrival, demand a written contract, especially if there is a hefty security deposit. And, please, read the contract from A to Z before signing it!
